Multiple Redirect Checker

May 20th, 2008 by David

Checking redirecting URLs is important to do - poorly configured redirects can harm user experience (causing a decrease in traffic) and can confuse search engines, causing indexing problems and/or lose in rankings.

While most redirects only occur once, sometimes a domain will have a more complex situation set up, making it more difficult to check using existing tools. To help solve this problem, the multiple redirect checker will check a URL for a HTTP redirect and then keep following any more it finds till it reaches its final destination. This allows you to:

  • Check a single URL for a redirect
  • Check status of final destination domain/URL
  • Check status of multiple redirects
  • Locate SEO friendly and unfriendly redirects

This tool is pretty straight-forward to use. Simply type in the URL (including the http(s)://) of the page you want to check and if it finds a redirect, it will follow it to the end, displaying the results. What to see it in action? At the time of writing, http://www.hp.co.za has 4 redirects, so type in that URL and see the results :)
